On June 20, Journey Portland debuted a controversial advert in four important national publications, such as The New York Situations. Intended to encourage visitors to take a look at Portland, the $100,000, text-only ads get started with: “You’ve heard a large amount about us recently. It’s been a while due to the fact you listened to from us. Some of what you’ve listened to about Portland is legitimate. Some is not.” It goes on to explain Portland as a spot of “dualities, but hardly ever polarities” and household to “some of the loudest voices on the West Coast.” The advertisement immediately sparked discussion and backlash on social media. WW asked four advert executives for their consider on the campaign (“A Pleasant Put to Visit,” June 23, 2021). Some praised the ad’s honesty, while one termed the ad an outright lie. Here’s what our audience had to say:

Jerry Ketel, founder of CreateGood Studio, via wweek.com: “I experienced a lot more to say about this concern. Initial, it is just an advert. What we need to do is take care of our issues. Motion issues more than communications. We obtained our standing based mostly on our values and how distinct we are when compared to the rest of the state. It was all ruined inside of a year. The only way to reclaim our placement as one particular of the greatest metropolitan areas in America is to address the anarchists and solve the homeless difficulty. AND we need to have to unleash Portland’s creativity in a downtown core that will if not take several years to rebuild.”

Bdbr, via wweek.com: “I wholly agree with you, but there is likely to be a extensive lag between solving our community concerns and convincing the place that the complications are solved. There has not been a riot because May 21—over a thirty day period, but in the past week a single U.S. senator has referenced the riots happening ‘every other evening,’ and the National Assessment has published about riots ‘every night time due to the fact the loss of life of George Floyd.’ I also observed a survey in which 63% were frightened to pay a visit to Portland because of riots. We can deal with our challenges, but how do we get over the conservative misinformation campaign that has determined to make Portland appear even worse than it is?”

@ElinorFrost14, via Twitter: “I have a dwelling in Portland and I lived there for 35 years. The metropolis has astounding waterfront parks, an array of top-notch dining establishments, lots of parks, trails and bike paths, and Mount Hood and the Columbia Gorge are shut by, and the coastline is a couple hrs away. This advert suggests zilch.”

@JeraldLynch1, via Twitter: “Who in their correct mind wants to vacation to and go to a city wherever violence and crime are up 550%?”

Lisa Beaulauranek, through Facebook: “I utilised to live in downtown PDX when the criminal offense fees ended up significantly even worse in Portland and have been absent for just about a ten years now. My husband and I went again for a weekend a couple of months back. We stayed in a super-good resort downtown and walked all-around having takeout and making the most of the outside patios. Took the MAX by my outdated Rose Yard condominium. It was great mainly because there have been so couple of folks. Felt just as safe and sound as any big metro in the U.S.”

V S, via wweek.com: “I went for a bicycle journey very last evening down Northwest Flanders, then by downtown, then interior Southeast, I was blown absent by how numerous men and women were out. The Benson experienced bellhops outside greeting autos. Man, did it truly feel like Portland is coming raging back. However plenty of boarded-up places, but lots of new stuff as perfectly. I was genuinely amazed and inspired.”

Pat Boyer Wiggins, by way of Facebook: “I’ve lived in Oregon considering that 1975—most of that time in or all-around Portland. I nevertheless enjoy living right here. We will get the job done through this tragic time and occur out much better. There is no 1 explanation for what is been occurring, so there will not be 1 uncomplicated alternative. Heaps of issues, but we really like it listed here and need to be good and perform to fix it.”
